Summer holidays: take the right approach when it comes to electric recharging points on the go

recharge électrique

Electric recharging stations have become an essential stop-off point for all electric vehicle drivers, particularly on motorways. To ensure a smooth and pleasant experience for everyone, it is important to follow good practices during periods of heavy traffic. This article provides advice on how to optimise the use of charging points and make recharging easier for all users.

Quickly park your vehicle and connect it right away

As soon as you arrive at the recharging point, be efficient to ensure that the service runs smoothly, and avoid blockages. Follow the key steps below to optimise your time and that of other users:
Why is this important?

  • Ease of Use: rapid connection reduces wait times for other users.
  • Optimisation of charging points: some charging points may cancel the connection if charging does not begin quickly.
  • Respect for other drivers: if a vehicle is immobilised without being charged, it is unnecessarily monopolising a terminal.

Don't recharge beyond 80%, and optimise your journey

The recharge time from 80% to 100% is equal to the recharge time from 20% to 80%. To preserve their longevity and prevent overheating, batteries in electric vehicles voluntarily slow down their recharging speed once they have reached 80%. Consequently, staying connected beyond this limit will unnecessarily prolong the time that the recharging point is in use.
An 80% charge is generally enough to reach your destination, or another charging station with greater flexibility. By freeing up the charging point, you give other users faster access to recharge their vehicles.

Limit your recharge time to 30 minutes

The recharge time from 80% to 100% is equal to the recharge time from 20% to 80%. To preserve their longevity and prevent overheating, batteries in electric vehicles voluntarily slow down their recharging speed once they have reached 80%. Consequently, staying connected beyond this limit will unnecessarily prolong the time that the recharging point is in use.
An 80% charge is generally enough to reach your destination, or another charging station with greater flexibility. By freeing up the charging point, you give other users faster access to recharge their vehicles.

At fast-charging stations, we recommend that you do not charge for more than 30 minutes. This time is generally sufficient to obtain a sufficient charge without immobilising the recharging point for too long.
Why limit it to 30 minutes?

  • After this time, recharging speed slows down considerably, making time spent at the terminal less efficient.
  • This allows more users to access the terminals, especially during very busy periods.
  • Some stations apply additional charges after a certain time to encourage smoother rotation. Check the characteristics of the terminal before connecting.

Tip: stay in the vicinity of your vehicle and the electric charging point to monitor charging progress, and be ready to depart as soon as you have a suitable charge.

Clear the charging bay immediately afterwards

Once you've finished recharging or you've recharged enough to resume your journey, unplug your vehicle and leave the recharging point without
delay. Don't leave your car parked unnecessarily in a charging bay that is still connected, as this could prevent other drivers from recharging.
Why is this important?

  • A bay occupied by an uncharged vehicle slows down turnover and creates wait times.
  • Some stations charge a surcharge after recharging to prevent abusive parking.
  • Rapid departure from the terminal improves access for all users.

Give a warm welcome to the teams working to help you

The teams in charge of managing charging points on the motorway are there to support you and ensure that the stations are working properly. A respectful and courteous welcome will help to maintain a pleasant atmosphere, and make it easier to respect customers' orders and avoid any overflow. Our teams are there to quickly assist you if needed. Please consult the Fulli application to find out about the availability of charging stations at a given location, and listen to radio 107.7 to be informed of any risk of overcrowding of charging stations along your route.
